BRITTANY SHANE
Sunday, 11/29 – 5 PM
After eight years in San Francisco, Brittany Shane has become well-known on the west coast music scene. Perhaps it’s her down-to-earth Midwestern charm and the fine sense of humor conveyed in her songs that make you wish you could step through your speakers and into a bar, where she’ll be waiting with a beer. Sure, she makes pure pop for now people, but it’s Brittany’s every-girl that comes shining through in the end. That is why Shane has been able to share stages over the years with such a varied array of artists (the Breeders, Indigo Girls, Stevie Nicks, Aimee Mann, Heart, to name a few), without seeming like there’s been a mistake in the billing.

THE DIMES
Tuesday, 12/1 – 7 PM
Playfully titled The King Can Drink the Harbour Dry, it’s no exaggeration to say The Dimes’ new record is a musical Cliffs Notes for an early American History class. A sonic adventure with influences ranging from Simon and Garfunkel to The Beatles’ White Album, it’s the distinct lyrical musings that set it apart from other folk-pop albums this year. Singer-songwriter Johnny Clay delivers a dramatic history lesson with a baroque assortment of instruments, sixties pop harmonies, and delightfully simple arrangements as though he’s channeling the spirits of people, places and events from early day Boston, Massachusetts. Originally a four-piece, The Dimes have recently evolved to a seven-piece, adding a cello, pedal steel, and a revolving cast of artists and instruments, representing all the layers, pastoral elements, and lush harmonies found on the record..

Music in Our Lives

If music be the food of love play on, said Shakespeare. For many millenia, music has been used to express emotion and to put order to chaos – from the ancient Greeks to the urban street music of today, the purpose of music has always been the same.

It’s said that you either have the gift or you don’t when it comes to music… Jimi Hendrix for example learned to play guitar on a right handed guitar even though he was left handed (so the guitar had to be played ‘upside down’ ) – this would be confusing enough for most people, but this gifted musician could play equally well with a left handed guitar, when he eventually could afford to buy one! Let’s face it – some people are born to play a musical instrument, some will only ever be able to play but not have that greatness that truly gifted musicians are. This doesn’t mean that those without that spark of genius don’t get their spot in the limelight… anyone can learn to play a guitar or keyboard if they have perserverance and the will to learn!

Children And Music
Music plays a role in the life of every human being either as an artist or a listener. It is doubtful there is a single person in this whole world who has not been soothed by the lilt of a beautiful melody. The earliest memories of a child are linked to the lullabies sung to him by his mother. As he grows older, he learns to distinguish the types of music that attracts him. Children can be introduced to playing instruments at an early age. A basic Casio keyboard is enough to begin with. There is no need to invest in expensive instruments or complicated music sheets till they learn to appreciate the
instruments better.
Types Of Guitars

There are many benefits to learning to play a musical instrument. Although a piano is the most popular instrument, you could also opt to learn to play a guitar too. There are different types of guitar to choose from and a beginner would do well to begin with the all time favourite acoustic guitar. The electric guitar could be handled after you have a basic concept of playing the guitar. The electric guitar is used popularly for pop music and jazz music. The Classical guitar or Spanish guitar is best used for playing classical or melodious music.

Playing The Piano
The piano is considered an easy instrument to learn. However like all musical instruments the key to good playing ability is plenty of practice. The Casio keyboard can be used for the initial stages of learning and the player can graduate to a digital piano or ideally an acoustic one. The advantages of a Casio keyboard is its portability. Although it allows you to play most pieces of music, a skilled professional and a serious lover of music would insist on an aco

Live Music Scene

he public it seems is more than happy to spend their hard earned money on going to concerts even if they are not prepared to bay to but the recorded music. Live music is much more of an experience and a social event. Music festivals are still doing well with record numbers of attendees. We have seen some of the biggest selling tours in history over the last few years from bands such as U2. Even though economic times are hard live music is beating the odds.

Shows such as the X Factor who also tour the artists after the final have helped contribute to the increase. Increased media exposure brings concerts and festivals to the forefront of people minds with live TV coverage of Glastonbury. The internet also plays a huge part with social networking sites making communicating with music fans easier. Tickets are also easier to purchase than ever before from reputable online ticket agents.

For amateur musicians though it is a different story. With fewer music venues open the scene has taken a hit. In order for new artists to develop their talent they urgently needs places to play and for audiences to support them. A lot of artists learn their trade by gigging at local pubs and clubs and the impact the economic downturn has had on them is immense. There is a rise though in local communities getting together and putting on local events. Function bands and tribute bands are still seeing a strong market as well as corporate bands that are still highly in demand for corporate events.

The live music scene is thriving but not everyone is seeing the impact of it. It is unfortunate that for a number of up and coming musicians they are being squeezed out of the market. Something needs to be done to protect the interests of those who could be tomorrow’s superstars. The industry has to support new music. The evidence shows that music fans love live music and the trend looks sets to continue. Some of the income from live music needs to be funnelled into funding up and coming talent to make sure the growth in this sector is not short lived.
